calcaneal spur  is the feeling of pain at the bottom of the foot and around the heel, as a result of inflammation of the tissues that connect the toes to the heel. It often occurs as a result of being overweight, and often affects runners. There are many ways to treat a calcaneal spur, and we will learn about them in detail in this article.

Symptoms of a calcaneal spur

One of the most important symptoms of a calcaneal spur is the feeling of pain at the bottom of the heel, or in the middle of the bottom of the foot, and the pain resulting from the bone thorn develops gradually over time, at first, the pain can be mild or severe, and some people feel a burning or soreness at the bottom of the foot that extends to heel top.

The pain is usually at its worst in the morning, or after a long rest. After any foot activity and prolonged walking, the pain can be exacerbated by increased irritation or inflammation. It is worth noting that patients usually do not feel the symptoms of a bone fork during activity, but rather immediately after stopping.

Newly exercised on hard surfaces.

Exercise with leg binding or heel stretch.

Excessive extension of the soles of the feet during exercise.

Wearing unsuitable shoes for exercising.

The incidence of overweight and obesity.

Make sure to rest the painful area for a few days.

Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes to reduce inflammation.

Apply gentle pressure to the area to reduce swelling.

Elevate the area, by placing the foot on a few pillows.

A calcaneal spur can be treated with exercise, herbs, and some lifestyle changes, and we'll talk about each one in detail.

Stretching exercises can help treat the bone thorn, and here is a set of exercises that can be performed:

 Calf stretch, and it can be done by placing the hands on the wall, then straightening the knee of the affected leg and bending the other knee forward, while keeping both feet flat on the ground, and continuing to stretch for 10 seconds. The stretch is repeated 2-3 times.

 Rolling Stretch: Placing a round object under the foot and rolling it back and forth can relax the foot muscles and relieve muscle tension and inflammation. A rolling pin, golf ball, or foam roller can be used for this exercise.

Towel Curl exercise, as it is possible to bend a towel or any piece of cloth with the toes to tighten the muscles of the foot and leg. The exercise can be performed by sitting on a chair with the feet straight and placing a small towel in front of the feet, then trying to grab the towel with the toes, and roll it towards the heels, repeating the process 5 times.

The use of essential oils may help treat the calcaneal spur, and help reduce inflammation. Among the essential oils used:

Lavender essential oil.

Lemon essential oil.

eucalyptus oil.

Rose essential oil.

Before using essential oils, it is important to dilute them in a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or olive oil, and then use them for massage. Essential oils can also be used to treat a bone thorn by inhaling steam mixed with hot water.

As for the treatment of the calcaneal spur using food and nutrition, some nutritional supplements and elements may help speed up the treatment of the bone thorn and repair tissues, and these elements include:

Vitamin C.

zinc.

Glucosamine.

Bromelain.

Fish oil.

It is preferable to obtain the mentioned elements from natural foods rather than supplements.

Injecting corticosteroids into the area.

Surgical treatment of the calcaneal spur is resorted to in cases that do not benefit from the previously mentioned methods, and among the surgical procedures used to treat the bone fork is the laparoscopic process, or the radiofrequency operation, and the success of the operation is often approximately 70-90%.

Other ways to treat a calcaneal spur

In addition to the above, there are other methods that can be used to treat a calcaneal spur, including:

Use toe separators.

Use shoe inserts to support the arch of the foot.

Use orthotic stockings during the day.

Use sports tape.

Perform physiotherapy and massage.
